During the Mahōtsukai no Yoru (Witch on the Holy Night) anime film stage presentation at FGO Fes. 2026 on Saturday, organizers unveiled a special “double visual” crafted collaboratively by Type-Moon and ufotable. Alongside this reveal, it was confirmed that a smartphone edition of the original visual novel will launch on November 20—the exact same day the film hits theaters in Japan. Aniplex also published a promotional video showcasing the new double visual.
The first piece of key art was illustrated by Hirokazu Koyama of Type-Moon, who previously handled the artwork for the visual novel:

As previously scheduled, the Witch on the Holy Night movie is set to debut in Japan on November 20.
The adaptation will feature a returning voice cast.
Set in the late 1980s, the narrative of the original Witch on the Holy Night visual novel follows Aoko Aozaki, one of two siblings born into a storied lineage of modern mages. Despite her initial lack of interest in the magical arts, she is abruptly designated as the successor to her family’s legacy. This forces her into a reluctant apprenticeship under Alice Kuonji, an isolated young witch residing in a mansion on a hill. Aoko must juggle her demanding spellcasting lessons with her responsibilities as school student council president. Along the way, she crosses paths with Sōjūrō Shizuki (credited as Soujyuro Sizuki in English localizations)—a transfer student completely unacquainted with contemporary society—while simultaneously dealing with the schemes of her estranged older sister, Tōko Aozaki, who believes she was wrongfully robbed of her birthright.
Type-Moon‘s most recent gaming release for the title came via Steam in December 2023.
Prior to that, Aniplex brought the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch editions to Western markets in December 2022, syncing with the Japanese launch. Combined, the PS4 and Switch versions have surpassed 150,000 copies sold globally.
Historically, Mahōtsukai no Yoru originated as one of the earliest collaborations between writer Kinoko Nasu and illustrator Takashi Takeuchi during the mid-1990s, predating the official formation of Type-Moon. Initially drafted as a novel, the manuscript was kept private and shared only among close friends without a commercial release. Years later, Type-Moon revitalized the project into a commercial visual novel featuring artwork by Hirokazu Koyama, which hit shelves in April 2012 with plans for two sequels.
The story holds a significant place in the interconnected lore commonly referred to by fans as the “Nasuverse”—the shared fictional cosmos encompassing major Type-Moon properties like Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and The Garden of Sinners. Within this overarching continuity, an older Aoko Aozaki serves as an early mentor to Tsukihime lead Shiki Tohno, while an older Tōko Aozaki employs Garden of Sinners lead Shiki Ryōgi. Additionally, Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon-, the high-profile remake of Type-Moon’s original Tsukihime dōjin game, arrived on PS4 and Switch in Japan in August 2021 before receiving an English-language global release in June 2024.
