The production team behind Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi (Awakening Mystery)—the inaugural installment of the upcoming theatrical trilogy—released a fresh promotional video and announced additional voice cast members on Friday. The trailer offers a preview of the movie’s theme song, titled “Chain of the Abyss,” composed by Kevin Penkin and featuring vocals by Mori Calliope.
Newly added to the voice cast are:
- Sumire Morohoshi as Tepaste
- Takanori Hoshino as Cravagli
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on October 23.
A familiar core creative team is returning for the project at studio Kinema Citrus. Masayuki Kojima is directing, Hideyuki Kurata is overseeing the scripts, and both Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda are back to handle character designs.
Kadokawa initially announced plans for a sequel to the Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun television series back in January 2023.
The franchise first expanded into television with a 13-episode anime series that debuted in Japan in July 2017. Sentai Filmworks licensed the show, releasing it on Blu-ray in 2018, while platforms like Amazon’s Anime Strike and HIDIVE handled international streaming.
The second television season, Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, adapted Akihito Tsukushi’s original manga and ran from July to September 2022, concluding with an extended one-hour finale. HIDIVE broadcasted the season globally as it aired.
Prior to the new trilogy, the series saw several theatrical releases, starting with the Journey’s Dawn and Wandering Twilight compilation films in early 2019, followed by the canonical sequel film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul in January 2020. Sentai Filmworks brought these cinematic projects to North American audiences through theatrical and digital releases.
Set around a massive, perilous cave system known as the “Abyss”—the planet’s final unexplored frontier—the story follows the brave “Cave Raiders” who descend into its depths to uncover lost relics and ancient secrets. Riko, an orphan residing in the rim town of Ōrth, dreams of following in her mother’s footsteps to become a legendary raider, a journey that truly begins when she encounters a mysterious human-like robot boy in the upper layers.
